How to Get a Credit Card Increase
Getting a credit card increase is usually very easy. If you have had a good relationship with your credit card company – meaning you have always paid on time and never carried balances month-over-month, you most likely will be provided with automatic increases by the lender. Remember, credit card companies want you to use their cards, and they will generally increase the limit over time for valued clients.
If you want a credit increase now, before it is automatically offered, this will be similar to applying for new credit again. Even though the credit card company knows you, they will still want you to fill out a full application again and provide proof of your income, monthly expenses and the reason for your request for a limit increase. Most likely, your credit report will be pulled again, and you will need to wait for your application to be approved. The easiest way to request a limit increase is to do it online or on the phone. Often times you can talk to a credit advisor over the phone, and they can easily increase your limit by just asking you a few questions.
Christine’s Tip:
Asking for a credit increase is not a bad thing. Sometimes it’s a good idea to get an increase on a reward card that you want to use more. You may be doing a home renovation or using your card for business, and getting an increase to the limit makes sense if you plan to use it more. Now, on the other hand, if you are just wanting an increase to your credit cards to pay off other credit – well that isn’t a good idea. Credit is necessary today, but for some it can be dangerous. Always be responsible in how you use your credit cards.
